When it comes to common plumbing repairs at your home, the replacement of pipes (copper or PVC) is one of the easiest task to undertake. A broken PVC pipe leads to excess wastage of water which in turn shows in your monthly water bills.

Since PVC pipes are prone to repeated cracks and leaks, their inspection must be a regular feature in your annual itinerary.

Start off the campaign by arranging all the necessary plumbing tools that you would need during the project. The tools such as pipe wrenches, screwdrivers, a roll of Teflon tape, a pair of channel lock pliers, a sealant compound etc. have to be incorporated in the regular scheme of things.

Before the commencement of the project, turn off the main water supply from the water control valve. Once water supply is cut off, move to the project site and observe the crack in the PVC pipe. With the help of tape, mark down the position on either side of the crack from where the pipe is supposed to be removed. Keep a margin of about six inches on both sides of the crack while marking down.

Place a large container or a bucket under the cracked PVC pipe so as to collect the water dripping down from the pipe. A rag or a cloth is just tied to the pipe to remove the water.

Start the cutting operation of the pipe with the help of a hacksaw. Cut one end first and drain it down to the container placed underneath. Now move on to the other end and cut it apart as well. Make sure that all the safety precautions are kept in tact during the usage of the hacksaw. Detach the pipe from the setup and take it down to a local plumbing/hardware store. The width and the quality of the new pipe must be at par with the old cut out pipe. Allow the salesperson to make any recommendation regarding the same and make your decision thereafter. Also buy the associated couplings that would allow the new PVC pipe to adjust to the fixture.

Connect the couplings to the old setup and apply a good amount of sealant on the juncture. Once the sealant has dried off, attach the new PVC pipe to the couplings and cement it well.

If the things start to fall apart during any phase of the project, make way for a professional.
