Cheap double glazing can reduce heat loss in your house by up to 50 per cent by helping to keep the heat inside the house rather than escaping through the windows. By reducing heat loss, you can save a lot of money on your heating bill as well as reducing carbon dioxide emissions and being more environmentally friendly. Not only can double glazing save you money, but it can also add value to your home.

Double glazing works by placing two panes of glass on the windows and filling the space with a type of gas such as xenon, argon, krypton or even regular air. This acts as an insulation pillow that significantly reduces heat loss, noise and condensation.

The gap between the panes of glass are the key to the insulation. Sometimes this gap has a vacuum in it. There is no atoms in a vacuum, so there is nothing that can conduct sound through. This keeps quite a bit of outside noises out and inside noises in. Also heat and cold can not go directly through the vacuum, so it comes through much more slowly than it otherwise would.

The best insulator is a vacuum, but very few double glazed windows use this. That is because the window has to be very strong to contain a vacuum. A partial vacuum can be used, but this is uncommon. A partial vacuum means they have removed some of the air, but not all of it. Usually a gas is used though. This can be argon, xenon, or krypton.

These gasses are chosen because none of them are harmful. They are all stable, and have no smell or color. That means they won’t distort the view through the window. Krypton is used for the high performance windows, or those that have a small gap between the two panes. Argon is used for most regular uPVC windows. Xenon isn’t normally used at all, because it is very expensive.

Sometimes the windows in double glazing are treated with different coatings that can reduce UV rays. This and other types of glass coatings are not really necessary and they add to the overall price of the installation. To get cheap double glazing you can easily avoid these type of coatings.

If you can’t find cheap double glazing, it can still save money to buy more expensive windows. Your energy bill will be cheaper, and that lasts for a long time. Also, as double glazing becomes more popular it’s price will go down. This will then help it become even more popular. As energy costs are increasing, people keep looking for ways to save money, and better insulation should certainly be on the list.
